About MathsCareers and the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications

“MathsCareers has been running for over 10 years and is one of the most popular websites of its kind within the STEM community. Aimed at ages 11 and up, the site contains hundreds of articles about mathematics in everyday life and mathematics careers. The large collection of career profiles highlights the diverse employment options available to those with a mathematics degree.

Two contests are run every year where entrants submit posters on a mathematical theme, and the site is supplemented by a subscription newsletter that includes links and quizzes.

Since our foundation in 1964 the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications (IMA) has been proud to support mathematics and its applications in all its guises as the UK’s professional and learned society for mathematicians.

The IMA is passionate about the ubiquity of mathematics and our membership of over 5,000 comprises mathematicians from hugely diverse backgrounds such as academia, business, commerce, education, finance, industry, research and students as well as those with an interest in mathematics.

We promote mathematics enthusiastically by engaging with a wide range of audiences through activities such as our branch network, conferences, grants and prizes, journals, mathematics teacher training scholarships on behalf of DfE, professional development, and work with leading academics and teaching experts. We aim to highlight to all the presence of mathematics in everyday life – smart phones and movie animation, to name but two instances – as well as its vital importance to the economy.”
