Enjoyable, effective outreach

Engage school students for the Big Day of Maths, 9 to 12 March

SIGN UP TO TAKE PART ❯

From Monday 9 to Thursday 12 March, join the I’m a Mathematician community and take part in CLF’s Big Day of Maths.

Getting started is simple. If your work involves any kind of maths, you’re encouraged to sign up, whether that’s:

  • Finance or accounting
  • Statistics
  • Modelling
  • Pure or applied maths
  • Economics
  • …or anything else!

You’re in good company – there are already 129 other professionals with profiles on the I’m a Mathematician site!

  • So far this year, they’ve taken part in 38 Chats, connecting with an estimated 700 students
  • Check out health researcher Laura, data analyst Margaret, and battery engineer Ferran‘s profiles
  • Read Eliza’s experience ❯

By taking part, you can:

  • Support school students to see the real-world applications of their learning
  • Answer students’ questions about how you use maths in your work
  • Support students to break down stereotypes of what a mathematician is ‘supposed’ to be
  • Gain experience of public engagement in a flexible and enjoyable way

How does it work?

Create a profile, connect with school students in 30-minute live Chats, and answer their follow-up questions.

It’s all online and text-only, so you can:

  • Take part from the office, on site, at home – anywhere with an internet connection!
  • Join in when at times that suit your schedule
  • Engage and inspire students with no preparation, planning, or travel time needed

Why take part?

  1. We prioritise schools with otherwise limited access to outreach, to connect you with the students who need you most
  2. We take care of the logistics to let you focus on inspiring students
  3. It’s not just school students who benefit – mathematicians enjoy it too!
    • I’m a Mathematician is a low-pressure way to ‘dip your toes in’ to outreach – build engagement and communication skills as you go
