Thank you to everyone who joined us in celebrating Maths Week England! From 11 to 18 November, students connected with mathematicians to explore how maths is a subject relevant and accessible to all.
🧮 Maths Week: by the numbers
Over the week, 5 schools took part in 27 Chats, shared between a total of 37 classes. That’s almost 1000 students from years 7 to 12, plus 33 different mathematicians! They had a lot to say – an impressive 5133 messages were shared in Chats, as well as 295 follow-up questions submitted on the Ask page.
Attendance awards ⭐️
Huge well done to Amy M, Caroline R, and Nevil H who, between them, attended over 2/3 of the week’s Chats 👏
A special mention goes to Colyton Grammar School for taking part with a different year group each day!
🗨️ In the Chats
Lots of students wanted to know how maths skills might help them with their future careers. A student from Westhoughton High School heard about a range of ways people might use maths, in and outside of work. Annabelle was interested in Sebastian’s in-depth answer:
Students at The Robert Napier School found out how maths might be helpful to them too, even with career goals outside of STEM:
Chats were full of examples of maths being relevant in our everyday lives.
Lili read Caroline’s profile to find out she’s a keen archer and that got her wondering if maths can help in sports too.
There were lots of other ways to use maths in work, hobbies, and spare time shared over the course of Maths Week. You might’ve done some of the activities they shared without even realising they use maths! Take a look:
🔎 Follow-up questions
Shoutout to Rachel E for giving some great insights over the week, and sharing how maths is ‘the language we use to describe the universe’.
We hope everyone who took part enjoyed it and found out some of the ways that maths is all around us.
